Chapter 4 of Benedict’s Rule which is entitled The Tools of Good Works

RB Tools of Good Works: To love the Lord God with the whole heart, the whole soul, the whole strength.

RB Tools of Good Works: Then, to love the neighbour as oneself (cf Mt 22:37-39; Mk 12:30-31; Lk 10:27).

RB Tools of Good Works: Then, not to kill, not to commit adultery, not to steal.

RB Tools of Good Works: Not to covet (cf Rom 13:9), not to bear false witness (cf Mt 19:18; Mk 10:19; Lk 18:20), to honour all people (cf 1 Pt 2:17).

RB Tools of Good Works: Not to do to others what one would not have done to oneself. Cf Tob 4:16; Mt 7:12; Lk 6:31).

RB Tools of Good Works: To deny one’s self in order to follow Christ (cf Mt 16:24; Lk 9:23).

RB Tools of Good Works: To chastise the body (cf 1 Cor 9:27), not to seek after pleasures.

RB Tools of Good Works: To love fasting, To relieve the poor, to clothe the naked.

RB Tools of Good Works: To visit the sick (cf Mt 25:36), to bury the dead, to help those in trouble.

RB Tools of Good Works: To console the sorrowing, To hold oneself aloof from worldly ways.

RB Tools of Good Works: To prefer nothing to the love of Christ.

RB Tools of Good Works: Not to give way to anger, not to foster a desire for revenge, not to entertain deceit in the heart.

RB Tools of Good Works: Not to make a false peace, not to forsake charity, not to swear, lest one should swear falsely.

RB Tools of Good Works: To speak the truth with heart and tongue.

RB Tools of Good Works: Not to return evil for evil (cf 1 Thes 5:15; 1 Pt 3:9), to do no injury, to bear patiently any injury done to us.

RB Tools of Good Works: To love one’s enemies (cf Mt 5:44; Lk 6:27), not to curse those who curse us, but rather to bless them.

RB Tools of Good Works: To bear persecution for justice sake (cf Mt 5:10).

RB Tools of Good Works: Not to be proud, not to be given to wine (cf Ti 1:7; 1 Tm 3:3), Not to be a great eater.

RB Tools of Good Works: Not to be drowsy, not to be slothful (cf Rom 12:11), not to be a murmurer, not to be a detractor.

RB Tools of Good Works: To put one’s trust in God, to recognise that the author of any good in oneself is God and not oneself.

RB Tools of Good Works: To be convinced that any evil in oneself is one’s own work and charge it to oneself.

RB Tools of Good Works: To fear the day of judgment, to be in dread of hell, to desire eternal life with all spiritual longing.

RB Tools of Good Works: To keep death before one’s eyes daily, to keep a constant watch over the actions of one’s life, to hold as certain that God sees us everywhere.

RB Tools of Good Works: To dash at once against Christ the evil thoughts which rise in one’s heart,  and to disclose them to our spiritual mentor.

RB Tools of Good Works: To guard one’s tongue against bad and wicked speech, not to love much speaking.

RB Tools of Good Works: Not to speak useless words and such as provoke laughter, not to love much or boisterous laughter.

RB Tools of Good Works: To listen willingly to holy reading, to apply oneself often to prayer.

RB Tools of Good Works: To confess one’s past sins to God daily in prayer with sighs and tears, and to amend them for the future, not to fulfil the desires of the flesh (cf Gal 5:16).

RB Tools of Good Works: To hate one’s own will, to obey the commands of the Abbot in all things, even though he himself (which Heaven forbid) act otherwise.

RB Tools of Good Works: Obey the abbot, mindful of the Lord’s saying: “you must be careful to do everything they tell you. . .

RB Tools of Good Works: but do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.  (Mt 23:3).

RB Tools of Good Works: Not to desire to be called holy before one is; but to be holy first, that one may be truly so called.

RB Tools of Good Works: To fulfil daily the commandments of God in all our works.

RB Tools of Good Works: To love chastity. To hate no one.  Not to be jealous; not to entertain envy.

RB Tools of Good Works: Not to love strife. Not to love pride. To honour the aged. To love those who are younger.

RB Tools of Good Works: To pray for one’s enemies in the love of Christ. To make peace with an adversary before the setting of the sun.

RB Tools of Good Works: Never to despair of God’s mercy.

RB Tools of Good Works: Behold, these are the instruments of the spiritual art.

RB Tools of Good Works: If we use the Tools of Good Works always, God will reward us with the things he has prepared for those who love him.

RB Tools of Good Works: The workshop where we use these Tools of Good Works diligently is the enclosure of the monastery with stability in the community.
